Report on One day Trainers Training Programme on Solid Waste Management held on 06th February 2008 at Ashirbhavan Auditorium, Ernakulam.
Session I: Inaugural session
This session started at 10.30 am. Smt.Mini Antony IAS, Corporation Secretary, welcomed all. Shri. N.A Mani, Health and Education Standing Committee Chairman Corporation of Kochi precided over the function. Prof. Mercy Williams, The Worshipfull Mayor Inaugurated the Training Programme. Councilor Adv. Anilkumar felicitated the function and vote of thanks given by Sri. K.G Sahuji, Project Manager, KSUDP, PIU, Kochi. This session ends at 11.30 am.

- No wastes should go to the ground at any stage of the process in Solid Waste Management.
- Avoid multiple handling of the waste for preventing health issues to those who are working in the field.
- Use modern technologies to modify vehicles for transporting waste from the source.
- Change attitude of the persons and encourage for teamwork.

- Identify proper pick up points for transferring waste into vehicles
- Ensuring coverage of 100% door step collection in the area by direct transportation of waste into suitably designed transportation vehicles.
- Ensure the workers have taken preventive and safety measures when they are working in the field.
- Continuous awareness programme and campaign has to conduct with the help of residence association as a part of IEC in micro level for intensifying segregation at source. The concluded points can reach to the public in various levels by conducting division level awareness programme through explaining about the proper ways using for solid waste management and also by distributing Notices to the public.
- Special colour has to decide for degradable and non-degradable waste carrying container and dispose the waste in specific containers. Green colour, the representation of ecofriendly substances, will make more suitable for biodegradable waste, also non bio degradable waste can be go to the container having white colour.specific time has to fix for disposing waste and also accurate time schedule has to arrange for vehicles which carrying waste. In door-to-door collection waste should not collect in plastic container bags.
- Kudumbasree is doing door collection in coordinating with residential association. But still the people dumping mixed waste in plastic carry bags even from those who are staying away from the site. Form night squared to avoid such a miserable situation and it will make ease for door step collection.
- Strong Groups have to form in the division levels for organizing micro level awareness programme with the help of division councilors. Take immediate action for forming residence associations in all divisions.
